Profile:

Prof Saw Seang Mei is the Head, Myopia Unit, Singapore Eye Research Institute and Professor of Epidemiology at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. She received her MBBS degree from the National University of Singapore and both her MPH and PhD from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Seang Mei’s research expertise is the epidemiology, genetics and treatment of myopia. She has established the natural history, role of outdoors and nearwork in myopia aetiology and developed new gadgets and treatments for myopia.

Seang-Mei is the Principal Investigator of the Singapore Cohort study Of the Research factors for Myopia (SCORM), the STrabismus, Amblyopia and Refractive error study in Singapore preschool children (STARS),  the birth cohort, Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes (GUSTO) and the Family Incentive Trial (FIT). She has published more than 400 peer-reviewed international journals, including the Lancet and Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).  Seang Mei is the Associate Editor, Translational Vision Science and Technology and an Editorial Board Member of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Ophthalmic and Physiologic Optics, and the Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology.

She is the recipient of the Jeans Coombs Award Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (1998), the Geshin Mohn ARVO Travel Grant (2002), the Edward Clarence Dyason Universitis 21 Award (2005), the Garland W. Clay Award (2006), the Great Women of our Times Awards, Science and Technology Category, Singapore (2006), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Achievement Award (2009), the NUS School of Medicine Faculty Research Excellence Award (2009), the ARVO Silver Fellow award (2012) and the Chew Sek Jin Memorial Lecture Award at the International Myopia Conference (2013), USA, World’s Top 100 influential people in Ophthalmology by the Ophthalmologists (2014),  Annals Gold Publication Award, Annals Academy of Medicine (Singapore) (2014), Bernard Gilmartin OPO Award, College of Optometry, UK (2014), Gold Fellow Award, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) (2015), NUHS-Mochtar Riady Pinnacle Excellence Award (2015), the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Achievement Award (2015) and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) Prevention of Blindness Award (2015).  Seang Mei was the past Chair of the 11th International Myopia Conference held from 16th to 18th August, 2006 in Singapore, and is the past Chair (2010) of the Program Committee, Clinical/Epidemiologic section, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and Convenor, Ophthalmic Epidemiology, Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), Taipei 2016.
